Subsurface Utility Engineering

GEL Geophysics, LLC performed Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services to Quality Level A standards to assist the architect in planning and construction of a new medical building at a major hospital. Extensive two-dimensional ground penetrating radar, and conventional radio-frequency electromagnetic surveys were performed over the 11-acre site to locate utilities that were installed as far back as the 1800s. Numerous critical utilities were identified crossing the project site. In addition to the active utilities, several previously abandoned or unmapped utilities were identified and designated. Selected utilities within these areas were also mapped to Level A standard using vacuum excavation techniques. The marked utilities were surveyed and an AutoCAD drawing depicting results of the SUE investigation was created.

This SUE survey created a cost saving of over $640,000 by properly locating a buried steam line. During the final design stage, the architect simply moved the building foundation ten feet to avoid re-locating the steam system.
