Non-Destructive Testing
GEL Geophysics, LLC conducted a nondestructive investigation at a manufacturing plant in Aiken,
South Carolina. The purpose of the investigation was to identify reinforcement location, pattern, and other details of the reinforcement; and
to evaluate concrete quality and the extent of cracks in the floor slab.
For this investigation, GEL Geophysics deployed Acoustic, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Electromagnetic techniques. Three areas were investigated.
The survey detected areas with severe cracking, as well as areas with intact concrete. It revealed the reinforcement pattern and spacing.
Areas 1 and 2 exhibited areas of cracking whereas Area 3 exhibited sound concrete. In Area 1, 58% of the area was found to be severely
fractured. In Area 2 88% was found to be severely fractured. No fractures were identified in Area 3. This investigation allowed our
client to noninvasively analyze their structural issues and design appropriate corrective action.
