City Of Charleston
The City of Charleston retained GEL Geophysics to perform a SUE project to support the Upper King Street Streetscape Project. The streetscape project included the renovation of roads and sidewalks, and more important, the placement of above ground utilities underground. This SUE project was designed to provide the City with detailed maps of all detectable buried infrastructure and obstructions along a 3,000' corridor of King Street, as well as portions of adjoining side streets and intersections. GEL Geophysics performed SUE Quality Level B work including the use of CART technology, single-channel GPR, and radio-frequency EM to designate the location of all buried utilities in the study area. While data obtained by the CART equipment was robotically surveyed during its collection, traditional land surveying was performed for designated utilities at the completion of each day's data collection and marking. Comprehensive maps that included the locations and depths of all buried assets in the study area were submitted to the City in an AutoCAD format compliant with their requirements. The information and detail provided during this project saved significant money and time, while at the same time provided a safer work environment for the contractors and general public. The end result minimized the length of time that construction work has impacted the merchants along the project route. This provided financial and political benefits for the City. In fact, during construction there were zero change orders as a result of utility conflicts.
University Of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
GEL Geophysics, LLC has performed Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services for eight major construction sites within the campus of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Medical School at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Approximately 70 acres have been mapped to Quality Level B standards. Selected utilities within these areas were also mapped to Quality Level A standard using vacuum excavation techniques. Thousands of utilities, buried manholes, and other underground obstructions and hazards were mapped using CART technology, single-channel GPR, and radio-frequency EM technology. SUE services conformed to designation of underground utilities as defined by the FHWA for SUE services, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Standard CI/ASCE 38-02 for the collection and depiction of existing subsurface utility data.
Fort Stewart - United States Army Corps Of Engineers
GEL Geophysics, LLC performed a Level B SUE investigation at Fort Stewart, Georgia to support the modernization of the base's central energy plant. The project included mapping an over 2-mile corridor to Level B standards. Radio-frequency EM and GPR technologies, as well as CART technology, were all used to map the buried infrastructure. The infrastructure mapped included electrical, gas, telecommunications, storm water, sanitary sewer, chilled and steamed, and drinking water. The results of this project were used by the contractor to avoid buried conflicts during the installation of new high temperature water piping and valve pits.
Medical University Of South Carolina (MUSC)
GEL Geophysics, LLC performed a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) and geophysics investigation in Charleston, South Carolina for the Medical University of SC. Approximately 4 acres of parking lot and adjacent rights-of-way in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, were mapped to Level B standards. The project included the use of radio-frequency electromagnetic and ground penetrating radar technologies, as well as Computer-Assisted Radar Tomography technology to map buried infrastructure. Infrastructure mapped included electrical, gas, telecommunications, storm water, sewer, and drinking water. In addition, geophysical methods were used to determine the locations of hidden subsurface foundation piles that were part of a former hotel on the property. The results of this project were used to successfully guide the design and construction of a new Central Energy Plant and adjoining parking garage.
