GEL Geophysics, LLC performed a computer assisted radar tomography (CART) investigation of Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site in Charleston, South Carolina. This investigation was performed for the South Carolina State Park Service to assist with their continuing archaeological evaluation of the location of Charles Towne from 1672-1772. The purpose of the investigation was to delineate areas of archaeological significance so that future archaeological pits could be strategically placed to yield the most data. The project site consisted of approximately 4 acres of grass-covered area. Numerous subsurface features were identified in the CART data, and this provided the archaeologists guidance for future digs.
Drayton Hall
GEL Geophysics, LLC performed a computer assisted radar tomography (CART) investigations at Drayton Hall in Charleston, South Carolina. These investigations were performed for Drayton Hall to assist with their archaeological evaluation of the plantation grounds. The purpose of the investigations was to delineate areas of archaeological significance so that future archaeological field studies (digs) could be planned for areas likely to yield the most data. The project site consisted of several acres. The results of our investigation were summarized on maps that showed the locations of potential artifacts. The archaeological field investigation was then performed, and numerous artifacts were discovered. Finally, active excavation pits and some excavated structures were surveyed following the field studies in an effort to correlate the CART data anomalies to the artifacts excavated in the pits.
