Kathleen H. Stelling
Chairman, The GEL Group, Inc.
Kathy serves as Chairman and Secretary of the GEL Group Inc. (GEL). GEL was formerly known as General Engineering Laboratories, Inc. The company continues to offer full-service environmental and engineering solutions including analytical and consulting services. Kathy married Jim Stelling in 1972. She obtained a B.A. in education from the University of South Carolina in the following year. Kathy taught high school history for eight years, heading the department for the last two. She withdrew from the workforce while raising their daughter Kathleen, and joined GEL in 2001. Kathy is a member of various organizations, both non-profit and for-profit.


James M. Stelling
President and CEO, The GEL Group, Inc.
Jim Stelling is President and Chief Executive Officer of The GEL Group, Inc. (GEL). Prior to joining GEL, Jim was with Ruscon Construction Co. for twenty years. He served in various positions and was President in 1995 when he joined GEL. In March of 2001, Jim and Kathy, together with Doug Earnst participated in the purchase of General Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (now The GEL Group, Inc.)

Jim obtained a B.S. in Commerce from the University of Virginia in 1972, and was married to Kathy in the same year. They have one daughter, Kathleen Stelling Hodgson.

Jim serves on several boards, including Roper Hospital, Harbor National Bank, and Porter Gaud School. He was formerly on the Board of Directors of Charleston Rotary Club, Trident Chamber of Commerce, Water Missions International, the Vestry of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, and other non profit organizations and civic groups.

His hobbies are golf and hunting.


Douglas E. Earnst
Chief Financial Officer, The GEL Group, Inc.
Doug Earnst was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. After serving in the United States Navy for six years, he married the former Frankie Cauley and settled in Charleston, South Carolina, where he earned his B.S. in business administration degree from the Citadel in 1979. Upon graduation, Doug joined the public accounting firm of McKnight, Frampton & Co. and worked there until 1989, when he accepted a position as Controller with General Engineering Laboratories, Inc. In 2001, Doug was appointed Chief Financial Officer and with Jim and Kathy Stelling participated in the purchase of General Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (now The GEL Group, Inc.)

Doug has served as a Deacon and Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, President of the Rotary Club of St. Andrews, Assistant Governor of Rotary District 7770, Treasurer of the Make A Wish Foundation of South Carolina, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Trident Academy and Treasurer of the Education Foundation/Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.”

Doug and Frankie have two sons and one grandson.


Carey J. Bocklet
Chief Operating Officer, GEL Laboratories, LLC
Carey Bocklet is the Chief Operating Officer of GEL Laboratories, LLC, a member of The GEL Group, Inc. GEL Laboratories, LLC is an experienced provider of comprehensive analytical services and data deliverables. GEL's analytical capabilities include organics, metals, general chemistry, radiochemistry, and radiobioassay.

Carey has been with The GEL Group, Inc. since 1989. She began her career at GEL Laboratories, LLC as an engineer with the environmental consulting division of GEL Laboratories, LLC (now GEL Engineering, LLC) and was the Director of this group for three years before transferring to the laboratory operations (GEL Laboratories, LLC) in 1998. Prior to her career with GEL, Carey worked for 5 years as a process engineer with a major electronics manufacturing firm.

Carey earned a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Clemson University in 1984 and a Master's degree in Business Administration from Clemson University in 1988. Carey is married to Dr. R. Cary Bocklet and they have two sons, Michael and Christopher. When not working, Carey enjoys boating with her family and watching her sons play baseball.


Scott D. Carney
Director, GEL Geophysics, LLC
Scott D. Carney, P.E., has been with The GEL Group, Inc. since 1992 and is the Director of GEL Geophysics, LLC, a full service geophysical consulting firm. Scott's career spans both traditional geophysics as well as Subsurface Utility Engineering. In particular, his extensive geophysics expertise includes managing projects ranging from gathering and evaluating data for Chevron's offshore programs to locating extensive infrastructure for federal installations, large universities, and municipalities. Scott has a Master's degree in geological engineering from the University of Missouri - Rolla and is a Registered Professional Engineer in 5 states.

Scott and his wife, Renee were married in 1992 and have a one daughter, Anya. During his time off work, Scott enjoys participating in any sport and do-it-yourself projects.


Joseph E. Coffey
Director, GEL Engineering, LLC
Joe Coffey, Jr., P.E., is Director of GEL Engineering, LLC, a member of the GEL Group, Inc. GEL Engineering, LLC offers full-service environmental and engineering consulting services primarily throughout the southeastern US. Prior to joining GEL Engineering, LLC in October 2004, Coffey had served as President/CEO of a regional A/E firm in upstate NY, as Executive Director of the University Heights Association, Inc., an education and health consortium in Albany, NY, and as a Director/Section Manager for Earth Tech, Inc.'s Albany, NY office.

Joe obtained a B.S. engineering degree from Boston University in 1972, a Masters degree in Engineering (Environmental) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1974 and has Professional Engineering licenses in several states. Joe and his wife Sharon live in Summerville, SC. They have two adult children; Laura and Christopher.

Joe is an active member of the Summerville Rotary Club, serves on several volunteer committees of the Trident United Way, is Chairman of the Legend Oaks Architecture Review Board, and is a member of the Building Committee for St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. He also serves as a Director of the Charleston Chapter of the SC Society of Professional Engineers and as a Trustee for the SCSPE Education Foundation. In 2009, he was appointed by the Governor to a Board member position on the Dorchester County Water Authority.

His hobbies are golf and reading.
