Charleston, South Carolina – July 12, 2010 – Furthering its commitment as a leader on environmental issues, GEL Engineering, LLC (GEL) held a Gas Cap Check Event at the firm’s Charleston location.
Along with an anti-idling policy for the GEL’s fleet of vehicles, gas cap checks are a part of GEL’s participation in the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Government’s Voluntary Air Quality Coalition. Replacing faulty gas caps reduces emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a pollutant that reacts with other pollutants in the presence of sunlight to form ground-level ozone. Breathing ozone, a primary component of smog, can trigger a variety of health problems including chest pain, coughing, throat irritation, and congestion. It can worsen bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. Ground-level ozone also can reduce lung function and inflame the linings of the lungs.
Over 120 employees voluntarily participated to have their gas cap checked for a proper seal on the vehicle’s gas tank. Of the gas caps checked, 8.3% were determined to be faulty. GEL replaced each of the faulty gas caps at no charge to the employees.
A faulty gas cap allows gasoline to evaporate from the tank, contributing to air pollution and wasting up to 30 gallons of gasoline per vehicle annually. By replacing the faulty gas caps, GEL reduced the VOCs emissions to the atmosphere by nearly one ton each year and saved 300 gallons of gas from being wasted.
With offices in Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina, and Durham, North Carolina, GEL Engineering provides comprehensive engineering, environmental, and industrial services to local, state, and federal agencies, as well as manufacturers, property owners, developers, and a wide range of commercial clients. The company is a member of The GEL Group, Inc. headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina since 1981.
