March 31, 2010 – The City of North Charleston (City), South Carolina, has awarded GEL Engineering, LLC (GEL), a contract to manage the City’s Brownfields Assessment Grant activities.
In a highly competitive application process, the City was awarded $400,000 from the EPA: $200,000 to assess hazardous substances and $200,000 to assess petroleum issues. The City will use the grant funds to further neighborhood revitalization and economic development by identifying and assessing properties including former industrial and commercial sites. This is the first EPA Brownfields grant the City has received.
“The community-wide brownfield assessment will provide valuable information to help transform areas of the City back into productive and safe use. The EPA Brownfields grant is the first step to making this happen,” said Shannon Praete, City of North Charleston Grants Administrator.
GEL is responsible for partnering with the City in public outreach efforts and managing the technical component of the grant program including serving as a liaison between the City and regulatory authorities and performing a community-wide Brownfields assessment.
With offices in Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina, and Durham, North Carolina, GEL Engineering provides comprehensive environmental, engineering, surveying, and industrial services to local, state, and federal agencies, as well as manufacturers, property owners, developers, and a wide range of commercial clients. The company is a member of The GEL Group, Inc. headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, since 1981.
