GEL Geophysics maps water distribution system
The Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, South Carolina has historic problems with the accuracy of its water distribution system maps. Typically the valves can not be located and often times when they are located, they do not isolate the water systems as expected.
To address this issue, they hired GEL Geophysics to map the water distribution system in the South Annex of the Base. We used an array of locating tools including ground penetrating radar, radio frequency electromagnetics, and vacuum excavation.
After collaborating data from all of these techniques, we were able to produce maps showing actual line configurations. In many cases, our maps did not even look similar to those provided by the Navy.
As a result of our investigation, Navy personnel are able to better protect this critical infrastructure from damage and manage their water system in a much more efficient manner.
