Hero Story

Our team of engineers enabled the safe placement of equipment for restoration.

Folly Beach, SC

As part of the restoration efforts to save the Morris Island Lighthouse in Folly Beach, SC, GEL Engineering, LLC, was asked to perform a hydrographic survey to map the sea bed surrounding the lighthouse. The first phase of the restoration included stabilizing the structure and keeping water away from its base by building a cofferdam surrounding the lighthouse. Once the cofferdam was in place, an investigation of the foundation could be performed and the repair work could begin.

GEL Engineering's team maneuvered through the strong currents and mapped the water depth and water levels within a 500-foot radius around the lighthouse. They used bathymetric survey technology to record water levels and also to identify submerged sandbars and large rocks.

GEL's hydrographic survey enabled engineers to safely position barges around the lighthouse so that the restoration project could begin.
