Engineering Service for Carolina Yacht Club

Charleston, SC

GEL Engineering, LLC was requested by The Carolina Yacht Club, located on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston, to obtain all necessary permits from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (SCDHEC-OCRM) and the Charleston District, Corps of Engineers to facilitate rehabilitation of the club’s marina. The project involved the upgrade of the waterfront facilities including the construction of a new boat ramp and the extension of an existing pier farther into the Cooper River.

As part of the permit process, GEL Engineering was required to provide preliminary design drawings for CYC. Design drawings included site layout, pier and dock design and layout, and preliminary fabrication details. GEL Engineering’s preliminary design drawings were expanded to provide full construction documents and specifications.

GEL Engineering, LLC has performed other design and permitting services for the CYC within the past several years. These include parking lot improvements, permitting of a waterfront deck, and application for a mooring field in the waters south and southwest of the CYC pier. Our ongoing relationship with CYC is representative of the type of client relationship GEL Engineering is known.

Problem Solved Examples:

Facility was built further out into the channel. The further you are out, the tougher the environment.

Had to engineer the floats for big boats.

Small footprint in which to add many facility uses.

Design and layout had to meet a diverse program and needed to be sold to a hard-to-sell membership.
